Stone was created in 2003 by Andrew Stoneham, formely head of production at Associated Press Television News. He had a vision for a proactive freelance management service that sat somewhere between what he believed to be the archaic services offered by both diary services and agents. Since its inception, the Stone service has attracted some of the industry's finest technicians and creatives as members, and the most respected UK broadcasters and independent production companies as clients.

In 2005, Stoneham and his co-managing director, Steven Blackman started Flint, a multi channel communications agency, of which Stone is now a division.

Stone is managed by Bart Bailey, who spent many years as an assistant director in television and film production, working for the BBC and many of the big independent production companies. This experience of the freelance market, coupled with an extensive list of contacts, bring enormous value to Stone's members and clients.
